The Constitutional Court of Romania unanimously decided on November 28 to demand that the Central Electoral Commission recount all valid and invalid ballots from the first round of the presidential elections.
This was reported by the local portal Digi 24.
It is reported that the decision was made following a two-hour session after an appeal filed by Cristian Terhes. He accused the votes cast for Elena Lasconi of being fraudulent.
The appeal filed by Sebastian Popescu regarding the fraud committed by candidate Calin Georgescu was dismissed.
The judges will resume hearings tomorrow. The court also requested that the CEC present the results of the re-examination.
A new court session will take place on Friday, November 29. A decision will be made regarding the motion to annul the results of the first presidential round, put forth by the candidate from the Romanian National Conservative Party, Cristian Terhes.
The Central Electoral Commission has scheduled a meeting for today at 16:00.
Recall that in the presidential elections in Romania, the far-right candidate and critic of the EU and NATO, Calin Georgescu, leads after the first round with 22.94% of the votes. The second place is contested by the chairwoman of the opposition party "Union for the Salvation of Citizens," Elena Lasconi (19.17% of the votes), and the current Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu (19.16%).
At the same time, exit polls indicated that Ciolacu and Lasconi are advancing to the second round.
