Banks from at least nine countries have stopped servicing UnionPay cards issued by Russia's Gazprombank.
This is reported by Russian media.
According to Russians, Gazprombank cards are not serviced in the United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Germany, Turkey, Qatar, Vietnam, Thailand, and Kazakhstan. There are also reports of issues using them in banks in China.
When attempting to withdraw money at ATMs, warnings about technical errors or that the card is not supported by the bank appear. Problems arose after the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on over 50 Russian banks, including Gazprombank, on November 21.
It is worth noting that the European Union is working on two new sanction packages against Russia. They are expected to be adopted by the end of February 2025.
In June, the Council of the European Union officially approved the 14th package of sanctions against Russia. This includes restrictive measures against an additional 116 individuals and entities, as well as sectoral sanctions.
