52.4% of voters participated in the elections.
Thirteen candidates are running for president. Euronews notes that polls indicated the frontrunners in the election race were the current Prime Minister of Romania, leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu, the leader of the nationalist party "Alliance for the Union of Romanians" (AUR) George Simion, and the head of the "Union for the Salvation of Romania" party, Elena Lasconi.
Two different exit polls, the results of which are reported by Digi24, suggest that there will be a second round of elections, in which preliminary data indicates that Ciolacu (supported by 25% of those surveyed) and Lasconi (18%) will participate.
The current president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, cannot run in the elections as he has already been elected to this position twice.
