It has been reported that Greek communists organized a counter-demonstration near the Taras Shevchenko monument, which later escalated into clashes.
In a statement by the KKE, published by 902.gr, the commemoration event was labeled as an "anti-historical and anti-communist fiesta."
According to the communists, they oppose their country's involvement in the war and called on the authorities to address the "real issues facing the local population."
Igor Posolenik, a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, noted on Facebook that the commemoration event at the Shevchenko monument involved, among others, children and adults from Ukrainian church, educational, and cultural organizations.
Participants in the event informed him that attackers bearing communist symbols blocked access to the monument and resorted to aggressive actions, insults, and threats.
He stated that a diplomat from the embassy suffered from the violent actions.
"An atmosphere of fear and chaos prevailed where prayers were supposed to be heard," Posolenik emphasized.
The Ukrainian Embassy in Greece expressed its protest against the provocations and violence by KKE members in a statement on Facebook.
"The embassy strongly condemns the disgraceful disruption of an official event dedicated to events of historical and emotional significance for the Ukrainian people. These provocative actions, which led to physical assaults, including an attack on a Ukrainian diplomat that caused physical harm, are absolutely unacceptable and a gross violation of international norms," the statement read.
Furthermore, the embassy called on the Greek law enforcement authorities to promptly investigate the incident and hold the perpetrators accountable.
