Trump postponed the implementation of tariffs against Canada following a conversation with Trudeau.

The United States will postpone the implementation of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods "for at least 30 days." However, in return, Canadian authorities must enhance their efforts to combat drug smuggling. This announcement was made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media platform X on February 3rd.
Трамп решил отложить введение пошлин на Канаду после переговоров с Трюдо.

According to him, he reached this agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call.

"Canada will implement our border measures plan worth $1.3 billion – strengthening the border with new helicopters, technology, and personnel, improving coordination with our American partners, and increasing resources to stop the flow of the synthetic drug fentanyl," Trudeau wrote.

He promised that around 10,000 personnel would be involved in these measures.

Trudeau noted that Canada will establish the position of "fentanyl czar," list drug cartels as terrorist organizations, and create joint forces with the U.S. to combat organized crime, fentanyl supply, and money laundering.

"I also signed a new directive for intelligence services focused on organized crime and fentanyl, which will be supported by an investment of $200 million," Trudeau added.

Trump made a similar statement on his social media platform Truth Social.

"Canada has agreed to secure the northern border and finally put an end to the deadly scourge of drugs like fentanyl that are infiltrating our country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans and destroying their families and communities across the country," the U.S. leader wrote.

According to him, tariffs will be paused for 30 days to see if a final economic agreement with Canada can be structured.
