The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has suspended programs that allowed migrants to temporarily reside in the United States, including a key initiative that provided entry opportunities for Ukrainians.

“The directive contained in an email sent by a senior official of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on Thursday and received by The New York Times demands an immediate halt to making ‘final decisions’ on applications related to these programs while the administration reviews them and decides whether to terminate them,” the report states.

According to The New York Times, the directive pertains to a number of programs under which migrants from various countries, including Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and others, can arrive in the U.S. Additionally, under Joe Biden, the “Uniting for Ukraine” program was launched, granting Ukrainian refugees permission to live and work in the U.S. for two years from the date of arrival, provided they have a sponsor.

According to U.S. data, as of September 2023, over 150,000 Ukrainians had entered through this program.

On January 24, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that the U.S. administration had begun the process of deporting illegal immigrants. According to her, since Trump took office, U.S. law enforcement has apprehended 538 illegal immigrants.
