The European Parliament condemned Russia's attempts to distort history to justify its war against Ukraine.

On January 23, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the actions of the aggressor nation, Russia, regarding the falsification of history. This information was reported by the European Parliament's website.
Европарламент осудил попытки России искажать историю, чтобы оправдать свою агрессию против Украины.

"In the resolution adopted on Thursday, Members of the European Parliament condemn the systematic falsification of historical arguments by the Russian regime to justify its illegal aggressive war against Ukraine," the statement reads.

The document was approved by 480 votes in favor. 58 delegates voted against, while another 48 abstained.

"The text adopted by Parliament rejects the historical claims of the Russian regime as futile attempts to undermine Ukraine's history and national identity in order to justify the ongoing illegal war. It also condemns Russia's failure to hold accountable for Soviet crimes and its suppression of attempts to conduct historical research and public debates on these issues, stating that such practices have aided the Moscow regime's ability to revive imperialist policies and instrumentalize history for its criminal purposes," the release states.

The EP believes that the European Union should enhance its fight against Russian disinformation, specifically by "strengthening and better coordinating its efforts for prompt and robust counteraction to Russian disinformation and foreign information manipulation and interference."

The resolution also calls for actively promoting media literacy and supporting quality media, expanding sanctions against Russian media that conduct disinformation campaigns, and increasing support for independent Russian media in exile, "to foster diversity of voices in Russian-language media."

"[Additionally] Parliament is deeply concerned about recent statements from social media companies regarding the easing of fact-checking and moderation rules, as this will further enable the spread of the Russian disinformation campaign worldwide. Members of the European Parliament want the European Commission and EU member states to strictly enforce the Digital Services Act in response to these statements from Meta and X, as part of the crucial fight against Russian disinformation," the EP emphasized.
