"Canada should become our coveted 51st state. Much lower taxes and far better military protection for the people of Canada – and no tariffs," wrote Trump.
According to him, the United States "unjustifiably subsidizes Canada by hundreds of billions of dollars."
"We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited energy, we should produce our own cars, and we have more timber than we will ever be able to use. Without this huge subsidy, Canada would cease to exist as a viable country," Trump believes.
The U.S. president accompanied his statement with the remark that it is "harsh, but true."
Later, Trump wrote that the U.S. is losing "trillions of dollars" subsidizing other countries.
"Why should these other countries pay a fraction of what U.S. citizens pay for medications and pharmaceuticals, for example?" he questioned.
Trump reiterated his promise to "make America great again."
"We are a country that is now being run with common sense, and the results will be amazing," the head of the White House promised.
As reported by CNN, Trump joked during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the end of November 2024 that Canada should become the 51st American state.
On December 10, Trump on Truth Social called Trudeau "the governor of the state of Canada."
On December 24, Trump's son Eric posted on his X social media page an image where the American leader is "buying" Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal on Amazon.
