The White House has urged the U.S. Congress to consider canceling Ukraine's $4.65 billion debt.

The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden has submitted a request to Congress to cancel Ukraine's debt amounting to $4.65 billion. This information was reported by "Voice of America" on November 20 and confirmed during a briefing by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Белый дом предложил Конгрессу США отменить долг Украины на сумму $4,65 млрд.

"Congress approved a law for additional appropriations for Ukraine's security amounting to approximately $61 billion in April 2024. According to the terms of this document, economic assistance – nearly $10 billion – is provided to Kyiv not as a grant but as a conditional loan. At the same time, the document [submitted by the White House] grants Joe Biden the authority to forgive 50% of this loan," the media reports.

According to their information, the statement directed to Congress stipulates that starting from November 15, 2024, the sitting president can forgive up to 50% of this loan, while the remaining 50% can be forgiven by the next president, Donald Trump, on January 1, 2026.

"We have taken a step outlined in the law to cancel these loans for the economic assistance provided to Ukraine, and now Congress can approve this," Miller is quoted by "Voice of America."

According to the State Department spokesperson, members of Congress are unlikely to oppose the White House's initiative, "considering the bipartisan support in Congress for providing assistance" to Ukraine.
