The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, may be appointed as a Supreme Court Justice following her defeat in the presidential election.
This information was reported by Newsweek.
According to journalists, 70-year-old Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who holds liberal views, may retire due to health reasons.
The Biden administration and Democrats, in general, would prefer her resignation to occur before January, as this would allow the White House, with Senate support, to appoint a judge with similar liberal views to replace Sotomayor.
If not, the appointment of a new judge will be the responsibility of the newly elected President Donald Trump, whose inauguration is scheduled for January 20. It is noted that in January, the Republican Party will also gain a majority in the Senate. This would enable Trump to nominate a conservative judge to the Supreme Court, shifting the balance of power in favor of the Republicans.
Harris served as the District Attorney of San Francisco and the Attorney General of California before being elected Vice President.
Although she lacks judicial experience, such an appointment would not set a precedent – President Barack Obama once nominated Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court despite her never having served as a judge.
Recall that Kamala Harris received 226 electoral votes in the presidential election, while 270 votes were needed to win. Trump garnered 301 electoral votes.
Earlier, media reports indicated that some high-ranking members of the Democratic Party blame President Joe Biden for Kamala Harris's defeat in the election.
