Zelensky to Fico: It was a mistake to believe that shadow deals with Moscow could last forever.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky referred to the expectations of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico regarding the endless continuation of shadow gas schemes with Moscow as an "obvious mistake" on January 12.
Зеленский заявил Фицо, что надеяться на бесконечное существование теневых схем с Москвой было ошибкой.

"It is good that the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Fico, has returned from his vacation at a luxury hotel in Vietnam and is now in Bratislava. For him personally, this is likely not easy – instead of enjoying luxury, he now has to try to rectify his own mistakes. It was an obvious error on Fico's part to believe that his shadowy schemes with Moscow could last indefinitely," wrote Zelenskyy.

According to the president, Ukraine had offered its assistance to the people of Slovakia during their adaptation to the absence of gas transit from the aggressor country, Russia, but "Fico himself pompously refused."

"Many in Europe warned him that he couldn't just sit back and wait. Now he is attempting to shift the blame onto someone else through PR, lies, and loud accusations," noted Zelenskyy. "But the problem is that he gambled on Moscow, not on his own country, not on a united Europe, and not on common sense. This was a losing bet from the very beginning."

Zelenskyy expressed hope that the further diversification of energy supply sources to Europe, cooperation with the European Commission, and the implementation of the policy of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump to increase American gas supplies to the continent "will help overcome the challenges arising from the shortsightedness of certain European figures."

On January 10, Fico stated that he is sometimes "irritated" by Zelenskyy, who "travels around Europe, only begging and blackmailing others for money." The Slovak Prime Minister called to put an end to this.

Fico also once again expressed his disagreement with the decision to halt gas transit from Russia by Ukraine and threatened to stop humanitarian aid.
