An explosion reportedly occurred in the ministry building.
The nephew of the deceased, Anas Haqqani, told the Reuters agency that the explosion happened as Khalil Haqqani was leaving the mosque after the afternoon prayer. The relative of the victim claims that six other people were also killed.
A representative of the Taliban, which is in power in Afghanistan, accused ISIS terrorists of being responsible for Haqqani's death. The agency notes that ISIS has yet to claim responsibility for the incident.
Reuters reports that Haqqani became a minister in the Taliban's interim government after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021. Previously, in 2011, the United States designated Khalil Haqqani as a "global terrorist" and offered a reward of $5 million for information leading to his capture.
