"Beer for your vote." In a German city, residents are encouraged to participate in elections with alcoholic beverages as incentives.

To boost voter turnout and encourage citizens to participate in the federal elections, officials in Duisburg, Germany, have decided to offer free beer. This was reported by the German tabloid Bild on January 27.
"Пиво за ваш голос": в немецком городе стимулируют участие в выборах с помощью бесплатных алкогольных напитков.

The idea was initiated by election inspector and local administration representative Martin Murak, who stated that he wants to "do something about the low voter turnout and strengthen democracy."

Murak added that the beer initiative is planned to take place before the federal elections on February 15. On that day, voters who have not yet applied for mail-in voting will be able to cast their votes at the "Sonnenwald" office and receive a free König Pilsener beer.

According to the initiator, there will be plenty of beer available, but if necessary, they can "restock directly from the brewery." For those who do not consume alcohol, non-alcoholic beer and other beverages will be offered.

As the article reminds us, voter turnout in Duisburg during the federal elections in 2021 was 68.1%, while the average across Germany was 76.6%.

According to Bild, a similar campaign took place during the European Parliament elections on June 9, 2024, but featured non-alcoholic beer.
