Orban called Putin, while Zelensky stated that "one shouldn't play with their image at the expense of unity."

After Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on December 11 that he had a phone conversation with the illegitimate president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Telegram that this represents a "play for personal image at the expense of unity."
Орбан связался с Путиным. Зеленский отметил, что "не следует использовать единство для улучшения собственного имиджа".

Orban stated on social media that he spoke with Putin for an hour, discussing, among other things, Russia's war against Ukraine. The Prime Minister of Hungary claims that his country is taking "all possible democratic steps to advocate for a ceasefire and peaceful negotiations." The Kremlin writes that the call was initiated by Budapest.

"We all hope that Viktor Orban won't be calling [the former president of Syria, who fled to Russia, Bashar] Assad in Moscow to listen to his lengthy lectures as well. It is absolutely clear that achieving real peace and guaranteed security requires the determination of America, the unity of Europe, and the commitment of all partners to uphold the goals and principles of the UN Charter," – wrote Zelensky.

In his opinion, "one should not play on their own image at the expense of unity – it is important to care for collective success."

"It is this unity in Europe that always brings success. Discussions about the war against Ukraine, waged by Russia, cannot happen without Ukraine. I am grateful to [the newly elected] President [of the USA, Donald] Trump and many European leaders with whom we are already working together to find the right and strong solutions for genuine peace," – stated Zelensky.
